Receptor mutations help slow disease progression
Article Abstract:
A research team led by Stephen O'Brien has discovered evidence that people with two mutant copies of the CCR5 gene are resistant to AIDS infection and that AIDS progression is slower in patients with one mutant copy. CCR5 is a chemokine receptor used by HIV to infect white cells.

New hope against blindness
Article Abstract:
Early human trials indicate that local administration of ganciclovir, foscarnet and HPMPC may be effective in treating cytomegalovirus, a herpes virus that causes vision problems including blindness in as many as 40% of patients in the final stages of AIDS.
