Recovery of fish communities in the Finniss River, Northern Australia, following remediation of the Rum Jungle uranium/copper mine site
Article Abstract:
The Rum Jungle uranium/copper mine in Northern Australia has contaminated the Finniss River with acid rock drainage (ARD) for over 40 years. This study researched the effects of the contaminants on seven different species of fish, and the impact of the remedial efforts by the factory. Studies show that there have been beneficial results ecologically by remediation, and that the fish may have developed a tolerance to the contaminants over time.

Degredation of bisphenol A in water by TiO(sub 2) photocatalyst

The purpose of the following study, which undertakes the examination of photocatalytic degredation of bisphenol A (BPA) in a TiO(sub 2) aqueous suspension, was to evaluate the estrogenic activity of the treated water in the photocatalytic reaction, and to confirm the total mineralization of BPA.

Mechanism for enhanced uptake of radionuclides by zooplankton in French Polynesian Oligotrophic waters
Article Abstract:
The enhanced uptake of Po-210, which is a particle-reactive radionuclide found in nuclear weapos, by zooplanktons happens when zooplankton biomass is low. Results has shown that Po-210 levels in zooplankton could reach extremely high levels of up to 3200 Bq/kg dry weight when the biomass level of zooplanktons goes down to as low as 0.14 mg dry weight/cubic meter. A simple mathematical model adequately explained the existence of an inverse relationship between Po-210 water concentration and biological productivity. Results indicate that low productivity marine systems, such as that of zooplanktons, are most vulnerable to the toxic effects of radionuclides from former nuclear weapons test sites.
