Reducing the sampling frequency of groundwater monitoring wells
Article Abstract:
A methodology for selecting sampling frequencies in environmental research that focuses on statistical thinking and brings considerable cost savings is described. The aim is to reduce sampling costs without jeopardizing information needed for decision making. It was applied to a 1992 benchmark volatile organic compound data set from 296 wells at the main site of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, while a variant was used on data from groundwater monitoring wells at the Savannah River site. An overall schedule reduction of 30% was achieved in the required number of samples per year, while annual cost savings amounted to about $1.8 million.

Modelling ozone levels in and around Southern California homes
Article Abstract:
Analysis of indoor and outdoor ozone (O3) concentrations in Southern California residential areas reveals that indoor O3 levels were largely determined by outdoor levels and the duration of time that the windows were kept open. The study also reveals that low outdoor concentrations resulted in uniformly low indoor concentrations but high outdoor concentrations resulted in varying levels of indoor O3 concentrations. Arithmetic mean levels for indoor O3 levels stand at 13 parts per billion (ppb) plus or minus 12 ppb while arithmetic mean levels for outside concentrations of O3 stand at 37 ppb plus or minus 19 ppb.

Aquatic-terrestrial partitioning of deep groundwater discharge using measured helium fluxes
Article Abstract:
The use of helium fluxes as indicators of aquatic-terrestrial partitioning of deep groundwater discharges was investigated. The results showed that 92% of the helium produced in the granite enters the creek and that only 8% entered the wetland. Partitioning was influenced by the size of the terrestrial area, suggesting that biosphere assessment models may use an aquatic-terrestrial partition of up to 80/20 for deep groundwater discharge.
