Geoscientists seek common ground on collaborations: working in China

The designation of a Chinese site as a reference point for Ordovician stratigraphy was barely approved by an international panel, due to previous problems of access to Chinese sites by foreigners. Chinese scientists stress that foreigners must respect China's sovereignty, laws and environment.

China tightens appraisal system
Article Abstract:
China's State Science and Technology Commission has adopted new procedures to control cronyism, improve review quality and improve evaluation of the commercial prospects of research. Scientific journals will play a larger part in evaluating research under the new procedures.

China has made significant progress in using science and technology to develop it economy, but its level of achievement still lags behind the developed nations. China will increase research spending to 1.5% of GNP by 2000 to improve its scientific and technological strategy.
