Report urges NSF to promote teaching
Article Abstract:
The advisory panel recommends that the NSF shift more of its resources to undergraduate teaching programs. Since the end of World War II, the NSF has funded primarily research-intensive universities, but most undergraduates, including those who will become teachers, attend schools that receive no NSF funds.

The NSF is divided over its continued oversight of the Internet, which has evolved from a research tool to a largely commercial venture. Currently 70% of the millions of $50/year fees are used to cover costs for registration contractor Network Solution Inc, and 30% are used to improve the Internet.

NSF prepares for new round with cuts at current sites
Article Abstract:
The NSF is preparing a round of competition to select replacements for its 24 Science and Technology Centers and is cutting the budgets of existing centers by 30%. The new centers will be chosen between 2000 and 2006.
