French scientists, already angered by previous government actions, are resisting a plan to confine federally funded research to seven government- defined applied-research priorities. They see Sec of State for Research Francois D'Aubert as an administrator who does not care about science.

New CNRS chief gets marching orders

Catherine Brechignac's appointment to head CNRS is part of a strategy to revitalize French science. Claude Allegre, the minister for education and research, wants Brechignac to streamline the bureaucracy of the public research agency and recruit young scientists.
