Researchers Go Natural in Visual Studies
Article Abstract:
Neuroscientists are researching how the visual systems react to natural scenes. Visual neurons interact in response to stimuli. Certain signals, such as potential mates, trigger strong responses and other redundant signals are processed in a minimal way like white noise. Studies on how visual neurons react to more complex scenes is ongoing.

Close Encounters--An Artist Shows that Size Affects Shape
Article Abstract:
A study on human perception of shapes and sizes is presented. The block portraits by artist Chuck Close are used to demonstrate how shape perception is dependent on size. The study refutes an age-old assumption that observers identify the shape of a retinal image independently of its size.

An excellent lightness
Article Abstract:
Contrast is at least as important as luminosity in the perception of brightness by the human brain, a fact known to Renaissance painters. Now Andrew Rossi et al have discovered a neuronal source for the perception of area brightness that is separate from retinal coding of luminosity.
