Rest in peace
Article Abstract:
The tube-a-manchette (TAM) grouting method is used in the construction of a subway connection in Washington D.C. This grouting method is applied in combination with the horizontal directional drilling by the new Austrian tunneling method (NATM). This combination ensures better control of tunneling and enhanced soil reinforcement. A sodium silicate-type grout mixture, Geloc IV, is used in TAM. This method is more expensive than traditional drilling and grouting but provides greater support to the structure. It can also be used to install forepoling and drainage pipes.

Metro nearing completion of prototype tunnel
Article Abstract:
The Metro Fort Totten station in Washington, DC, applied the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), which involves the integration of the rock and soil formations, into the tunnel's support system. Its advantages include lesser equipment costs and easier installation in severe ground conditions. NATM was particularly suitable for the Fort Totten project because of the soil quality, low water table and short tunnel length. The method also eliminated the need to cut down trees to make way for the construction project.
