Russian science face a new world order
Article Abstract:
Russian scientists find themselves hit hard by the changes in Russia as neither the government nor the society places a high priority on basic research. In the Soviet Union, scientists enjoyed a high social status and enjoyed many privileges as achievement in science and technology was hailed as a symbol of progress tied to the social advantages of the Soviet political system. Basic needs of food and shelter now take priority over scientific achievements. As a result, the government no longer gives scientists the esteem they enjoyed earlier.

Saving Soviet science from chaos and ruin
Article Abstract:
The US and Western Europe have done little to alleviate the financial hardship of scientists from former Soviet Union or to dissuade military scientists from selling their expertise abroad. Between June 1992 and August 1993, the American Physical Society organized a program to provide financial assistance to physicists in the former Soviet Union but the success of the program is still to be assessed.
