Science intrudes on Brent Spar saga
Article Abstract:
The environmental impact of Shell Oil Company's plans to sink the oil storage buoy Brent Star was studied after the environmental organization Greenpeace boarded the buoy off the west coast of Scotland. Both Greenpeace and Shell claim the report results support their own positions.

A mixed report card for critical technology projects
Article Abstract:
Europe-wide cooperative research programs such as the EC's Esprit and Eureka, formed outside the EC, have spurned much technological development but have not greatly enhanced European competitiveness. Descriptions of the programs and suggestions for reorganization are presented.

ESO and Chile begin to clear the air
Article Abstract:
An ongoing dispute between ESO and Chile over the Very Large Telescope project reached a preliminary settlement with a supplementary agreement extending the terms of a 1963 agreement. The next step is ratification by the Chilean Congress.
