Croatia: environmental effects of war
Article Abstract:
War in Croatia has caused a number of environmental problems, one of the most serious of which is the extensive pollution of the river Danube. The environment of the whole Danube delta region is at risk, with a common problem being leakages of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from damaged electrical equipment. This will have a widespread impact in interior and coastal regions, and international action to deal with the problem is urgently needed. Other environmental issues include uncontrolled disposal of industrial and household waste, abandoned sources of ionizing radiation and the management of stores of rotting wheat.

Disposing of CO2 from fossil-fueled power plants
Article Abstract:
An International Energy Agency (IEA) conference has considered the disposal of carbon dioxide in oceans, disused oil and gas wells and aquifers following research into its collection from fossil-fueled power plants. Ocean storage capacity of dissolved carbon dioxide is 20,000,000 gigatons compared with 125 gigatons in exhausted oil wells and 87 gigatons in aquifers. Ocean disposal provides a temporary solution but research into environmental effects is necessary. Old oil and gas wells may provide the cheapest and most environmentally-friendly disposal alternative.

Civil liability: controversial EC proposal defines environmental damage and who pays
Article Abstract:
The EC has proposed two new measures which would impose civil liabilities on polluters for environmental damage. Under the provisions of the proposals, companies who inadvertently cause environmental damage which affects all the member nations of the EC would have to pay significant amounts even when there was no negligence involved. This proposal has drawn criticism from European companies.
