Long search for sea urchin sperm receptor pays off
Article Abstract:
Female sea urchins lay eggs and await their fertilization by sperm from the same species, but scientists have only recently discovered how the egg receptor recognizes the sperm. Biologist William Lennarz has discovered such a receptor molecule called bindin.

Disease gene search goes big science
Article Abstract:
Research consortia in Europe and the US hope to identify the genes that cause psychiatric illnesses such as manic depression and schizophrenia. Each project will genotype several thousand subjects to find the chromosome locations of disease genes.
