Scientists hope competition will improve Internet access

Internet users in China have increased from 1,000 to 10,000 since the first link in 1994, and the growing number of providers should improve access and service. One ambitious project in the China Educational Research Network, which plans to link all colleges and schools by 2000.

Keep borders open for U.S. science
Article Abstract:
Sen Alan Simpson's bill curbing immigration originally dropped the existing waivers for outstanding professors and researchers and immigrants who benefit the national interest. These provisions and other parts of the bill would hurt US science and should be strongly opposed.

Many Japanese say West is still to their liking
Article Abstract:
Japanese scientists continue to begin their careers in the US and other western countries in spite of the improvements in Japanese research facilities. Working abroad allows them to gain a broader range of experience than is possible in the hierarchical Japanese system.
