Searching for the spin of the proton
Article Abstract:
Research at the new Hermes particle detector in Germany will be focused on determining the source of the proton's spin. Quantum theorists once believed that quarks were responsible for 100% of a proton's spin, but observational data have shown that quarks account for less than a third of the spin.

Physicists polish one model while looking to the next
Article Abstract:
Indirect measurements of the mass of the top quark agree with Fermilab's breakthrough direct observation and measurement, thus plugging a hole in particle physicists' Standard Model. New measurement techniques for future particle accelerators and the unsolved neutrino anomaly are also discussed.

Quark studies put theorists in a spin
Article Abstract:
Physicists had reported that the valence quarks contribute a small portion of a nucleon's spin, instead of all of it as predicted, but they could not agree on a value. Now three major labs have agreed that the contribution is about 25%. The source of the rest of the spin remains a mystery.
