Solvent release into a sandy aquifer. 1. Overview of source distribution and dissolution behavior
Article Abstract:
Researchers studied the deposition of three inorganic solvents in sandy soil, and determined the effectiveness of using methanol/water for dissolution of the chemicals. Researchers injected trichloroethylene, chloroform, and tetrachloroethylene into a sandy aquifer to simulate a spill. These organic solvents have a low solubility in water. Thus, they tend to stay in the soil. Unfortunately, they do break down slowly, contaminating the ground water at a level above that considered medically acceptable. Research data also shows that a small amount volatilizes into the atmosphere. At the end of the study, the contaminated soil was dug up.
