Sorption of toxic organic compounds on wastewater solids: mechanism and modeling
Article Abstract:
A theoretical model for determining the sorption of toxic organic compounds on wastewater solids is presented. The model, which is based on the Langmuir equation, is capable of solving for the adsorption of the toxic organic compounds from the liquid onto the surface of the sludge. It can also model the compounds' partitioning into the interior of the biomass. Results obtained from the application of this adsorption-partition model show very good agreement with existing binary sorption and experimental data.

Impact of chlorophenols and chloroanilines on the kinetics of acetoclastic methanogenesis
Article Abstract:
The effect of chloroanilines and chlorophenols, which are both toxic organic chemical groups, on anaerobic microbial reactions was tested. Chloroanilines were less disruptive to acetoclastic methanogenesis than chlorophenols. Relative toxicity to acetoclastic methanogenesis depended on the position of the substituted chlorine group on the two toxic organic chemical groups. Kinetic coefficients showed that both toxicants produced mixed inhibitions.

Studies on contaminant biodegradation in slurry, wafer, and compacted soil tube reactors
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the bioavailability of organics in compacted porous soil systems. Slurry, wafer and porous tube experiments were undertaken. A three-step protocol for determining kinetics parameters for toxic chemical biodegradation in soil systems was developed using phenol as the test compound. The rate and degree of phenol biodegradation were found to be inversely proportional to the complexity of soil systems.
