Source attribution of elevated residential soil lead near a battery recycling site

Article Abstract:

The possible contamination of soil in residential areas situated near battery recycling facilities is investigated by means of a statistical model. The study was carried out in a community near a former battery recycling plant. Indicator variables were used to distinguish the plant influence from background sources such as lead-based house paint. An atmospheric dispersion and deposition model was also developed to determine the effects of stack emissions and fugitive dust plumes from the facility. The computed results show excellent agreement with the measured data.

Diffusion and binding of protons in sediments

Article Abstract:

Natural sediment particles and macroporous polymer spheres exhibit similar proton binding, which is dependent on a combination of diffusivity, Donnan equilibrium and surface sites. This was gleaned from the examination of proton binding titrations of two sediments from Hamilton Harbour at Lake Ontario, Canada, using a model based on simple diffusion. Findings show that one-third to one-half of the binding capacity resembles diffusion into a Donnan domain, while the rest takes place on ampholyte sites such as iron oxide or silicate surfaces.

The effectiveness of the linear programming optimization technique in determining H-plus binding site densities for humic matter, kaolinite and titratic data provided by the US National Acid Precipitation Program is demonstrated. Experimental procedures and results are described in detail.
