Spatial and temporal variance of hydrocarbon pollution data in a coastal river-influenced sedimentary system
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the statistical significance of the coastal pollution mapping studies based on the sedimentary composition of aliphatic, chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons is discussed. Analysis of variance were used on the repeated replicate research vessel sampling on six coastline perpendicular transects. Changes in polychlorinated biphenyl composition of coastal sediments were also studied. The sampling scheme was found to be useful for the identification of the main coastal pollution discharge points.

Induction of cytochrome P4501A in the intertidal fish Anoplarchus purpurescence by Prudhoe Bay crude oil and environmental induction in fish from Prince William Sound
Article Abstract:
The induction of the cytochrome P4501A, which is expressed as CYP1A protein, is a useful indicator of the persistence of oil spill effects on aquatic organisms. Expression of the gene is directly related to the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. An analysis of the gill, liver and gonad tissues of Anoplarchus purpurescens intertidal fish species from Prince William Sound and Prudhoe Bay showed high levels of CYP1A expression.

Response of river otters to experimental exposure of weathered crude oil: fecal porphyrin profiles
Article Abstract:
The effects of heme synthesis were evaluated by characterizing the profiles of porphyrins in fecal samples of river otters and exposing them to weathered crude oil. The results do not support the use of porphyrin profiles as an individual biomarker because of the interactions between hemoglobin and CYP1A1.
