Spatially averaged local strains in textile composites via the binary model formulation
Article Abstract:
The micro mechanics of important failure mechanisms in textile composites suggest that some measure of strain averaged over a gauge length or volume comparable to the width of a single tow should be correlated with failure. This study implies that usefully accurate predictions of spatially averaged strains can be obtained even at the lowest level of mesh refinement.

Mixed-mode failure of graphite/epoxy composites
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted of the crack displacement and failure modes of graphite epoxy-plates, which have central cracks at different angles with the loading axis. The effect of the crack angle on the strength reduction ratio, the damage zone and the critical stress intensity factors is investigated by performing a detailed study.

Micro-structural analysis of chip formation during orthogonal machining of Al/SiCp composites
Article Abstract:
The mechanism of chip formation during machining of Al/SiCp composites that are based on the micro-structural analysis of chips and chip roots is presented. The mechanism involves initiation of a gross fracture on the chip free surface and its propagation towards the tool nose.
