Sperm protein makes its mark upon the worm embryo
Article Abstract:
Molecular biologist Heidi Browning and developmental geneticist Susan Strome report that a protein produced by sperm of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans enables the embryo to complete fundamental developmental tasks. This SPE-11 protein may help control how the genetic material from the sperm and egg mix.

Cell movement tale told by bacterial tail protein
Article Abstract:
Cell biologists Julie Theriot and infectious disease specialist Marcia Goldberg have demonstrated that the protein IcsA is sufficient to prompt a Shigella flexneri bacterium to grow an actin tail and move about. The finding may lead to the development of a vaccine against dysentery.

Protein studies try to puzzle out Alzheimer's tangles
Article Abstract:
Several recent studies attempt to explain how neurofibrillary tangles develop in Alzheimer's Disease and how the tangles facilitate neuronal death. The role of a protein called tau in the development of the tangles is the focus of much of the research.
