Sunflowers remove radionuclides from water in ongoing phytoremediation field tests
Article Abstract:
Sunflower plants exhibit potential as a cost-effective alternative in treating radionuclide contamination in soil and water. Field tests at the Chernobyl nuclear accident site and at a former Department of Energy uranium-processing plant revealed that rhizofiltration is an effective method of extracting radionuclides, including uranium, cesium and strontium, from groundwater. The roots of the sunflower cultivar, Helianthus annuus L., rapidly accumulate heavy metals and radionuclides once immersed in water.

Environmental consulting firm eye infrastructure projects
Article Abstract:
Environmental consulting firms should diversify their services and focus on infrastructure projects that are not directly related to environmental management. Environmental consulting companies can improve their profits by acquiring contracts for the construction of waste water treatment facilities which is expected to generate $100 billion in 20 years. Environmental consulting firms should also provide services for the repair and upgrading of tunnels and sewer systems for waste treatment plants.
