Superfund: new leadership, old problems
Article Abstract:
The Superfund program which involves the cleanup of hazardous-waste areas has not risen to expectations of its effectivity. Criticsof the program attribute its problems to the EPA's negative attitude in dealingwith potentially responsible parties or those liable for the wastes. The agency's too stringent liability regulations also impedes the program's progress and inhibits creativity in addressing environmental issues. The EPA developed the Superfund Accelerated Cleanup Model to facilitate cleanups but analysts emphasized that a major revision is required for Superfund to really work.
