TEA-21 something for everyone
Article Abstract:
The US government has authorized funding of $217 billion for transportation projects in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st century (TEA-21). TEA-21 money will fund over 1,800 designated projects costing $9.3 billion over six years from 1998. However, the bulk of the funds will be available during the six-year period for unspecified projects in any transportation field. Around $173 billion will go to highway construction and maintenance with the remainder available for projects including mass transit system development, transportation research and environmental programs.

Congress passes historic surface transportation bill
Article Abstract:
Congress has enacted into law what is considered the largest public works legislation in history. The six-year, $216-billion highway and mass transit law called the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century went into effect on Jun 9, 1998, and replaces the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991. The new law provides massive funding for every form of transportation. About 1,800 road and bridge projects in selected congressional districts will receive $9.3 billion of the funds.

TEA-21 cuts highway research
Article Abstract:
The 1998 Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century has substantially increased federal government spending in nearly all areas related to transportation. However, it has significantly compromised crucial financing requirements for national highway research and technology. Thus, TEA-21 has effectively curtailed the nation's ability to further react to technological changes which can be expected to emerge during the course of the legislation.
