TRB reports little future airport construction
Article Abstract:
The Transportation Research Board foresees few airport construction projects despite the growing congestion and recommends that airports seek alternative ways to address the problem. Proposed solutions include higher runway user fees and improvements in capacity management techniques. Hiked user fees may result in flight transfers to less crowded airports, use of larger planes and less stopover flights. Meanwhile, the TRB also reports that airlines provide adequate services, charge reasonable fares and provide safety for passengers.

Airport expansion on solid ground
Article Abstract:
The completion of the soil densification program at the Vancouver (British Columbia) International Airport will help preventing damages from earthquakes. Compacting of sandy soil of the Fraser river delta underneath the airport site curbs the liquefaction caused by the earthquake. Nicholson Construction, Washington and Fraser River Pile and Dredge Ltd., British Columbia have collaborated in this construction project which is expected to be completed by June 1996.

JFK airport cargo system will be US first
Article Abstract:
The John F. Kennedy International Airport will have a new cargo-handling system designed by Carl Schenck AG of Germany. The new system, the first of its kind to be used in the US, can service three 747-400 aircraft at the same time, process 250,000 tons of cargo per year and provide storage for up to 600 aircraft pallets. A computer command-control with automated workstations will run the whole system.
