Time of your life: reducing working hours can be good for business and people
Article Abstract:
The results of a study undertaken by the Institute for Employment Studies revealed that the UK has the highest proportion of fulltime employees that work 46 hours or more weekly as compared to other EU countries. The trend has resulted from management's perception of the EU's Working Time Directive. Longer working hours result ultimately in increased sickness and absence, lower productivity and quality of work, greater health and safety risks and reduced employment opportunities for those who are unable to work long hours.

Safety in mind: The way health and safety legislation is formulated has been opened up for comment
Article Abstract:
The government's Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has published a discussion document in an effort to illustrate the assumptions and procedures which form the basis of its edicts. The author of the document is Dr Jean Le Guen, head of the HSE's Risk Assessment Policy Unit, who believes that the HSE is responding to the changing mood of the public. The document's main emphasis is a reminder of the difference between the terms hazard and risk, and how the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Direct responsibility
Article Abstract:
At least three significant health and safety regulations in the UK will be fully implemented in 1996 and 1997. These are the Workplace Regulations of 1992, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety Regulations of 1992. These have substantial impacts of employers because of requirements such as the need to provide safety signs and protection of employees from risks from exposure to biological agents in the workplace.
