Taking the earth's magnetic pulse
Article Abstract:
An experiment which will measure the earth's magnetic micropulsations through the construction of a magnetometer is described. The device employs a torsion balance with fine quartz fibers with a laser pointer in which a beam will oscillate when the earth's magnetic field varies.

Article Abstract:
Titration calorimetry, or measuring heat flowing into or out of chemical interactions, can be done with simple equipment. Two styrofoam cups contain interacting chemicals that are measured by two circuits, a sensitive thermometer and a calorimeter.

Covert observations of nesting sparrows
Article Abstract:
Ophthalmologist and amateur naturalist Robert Slaughter adapted a birdhouse to allow him to observe nesting sparrows without disturbing them. He mounted the birdhouse under his deck so that he could observe them through a hole cut from above.
