A computer has been installed to correlate images received by the very long baseline array radio telescopes at a New Mexico observatory. The computer, or correlator, provides a fast and efficient method of bringing together signals received by the various telescopes.

Globe-spanning telescope
Article Abstract:
Ten telescopes comprise the Very Long Baseline Array extending from Hawaii to the Virgin Islands. The telescopes are used for probing nearby galaxies for black holes, which are objects whose strong gravitational intensity captures all light.

Reinventing the telescope

Technology developed under the cancelled Star Wars program is now being used to enhance astronomical observations. Called adaptive optics, the technology uses lasers, computers and mirrors to pierce atmospheric distortion.
