The Mississippi's curious origins
Article Abstract:
The origins of the Mississippi river and the processes by which it has come to flow along its route to reach the Gulf of Mexico are discussed. Passage of North America over a temporarily reinvigorated mantle hot spot caused uplift of a section of Ouachlta mountain range just north of the Gulf of Mexico in the mid-Cretaceous, forming an arch. Weathering eroded the newly formed highlands, reducing them to the level of adjacent lands.
