Along the Mississippi
Article Abstract:
Legalized gaming in Tunica County along the Mississippi has paved the way for an economic boom in the poorest county in the US. The unprecedented success of casino gambling here has raised hopes of developing Tunica County into a gaming resort destination in the same league as Las Vages and Atlantic City. Currently, nine casinos are in operation offering vast opportunities for employment in the gaming industry and ancillary sector. The positive economic impact of gaming is demonstrated by reduced welfare costs, increased child support payments and additional funds for education and infrastructure.

Continuing gamble on the Boardwalk
Article Abstract:
The dream of resurgence still remains to be realized, twenty years after gambling was authorized in Atlantic City in 1976. While substantial economic and fiscal gains are evident, the price in terms of revenue returns from other sectors has been enormous. The property tax windfalls from casino development have remained elusive as have improved city services and promises of diverse employment opportunities. The casino-based culture is hindering the growth prospects of other industry and contributing to the deep social divide between classes. The reality behind the glitz is too stark to be ignored.
