Germany's national genome research program will share the cost of mapping and sequencing projects of other countries already underway. But the new $130-million program will also investigate the functions of the genes already identified by other countries' research and sequencing efforts.

Less money, but much needed reform
Article Abstract:
The German budget for 1997 includes a 2.5% cut in funding for the science and education ministry, but the government is proposing reforms to improve nonacademic research. There will be more competition for research funds at universities and institutes.
