Article Abstract:
Information gleaned from the excavation of the Mesopotamian city of Mashkan-shapir in Iraq disputes the commonly-held belief that ancient cities were centralized and had authoritarian social structures. Analysis of artifacts indicates that the overall organization of the city was not centralized and that religion and politics were not that important.
