Fine arts professor Philip Fry developed his Old Field Garden as a 'gene bank' for Canadian plant species endangered by real estate and industrial land developments. Old Field Garden, in Ontario, has been developed to simulate natural ecosystems to encourage plant survival.

Biodiversity in vegetable gardens can be achieved by cultivating endangered plant varieties and swapping their seeds with other growers. This assures the continued existence of varieties that will otherwise become extinct.
