Crop Engineering Goes South
Article Abstract:
Development of transgenic crops is advancing in South America, with innovations in that region's important food crops such as bananas, cassava, and palm. These crops can be difficult to engineer, due to the nature of how they regenerate. Researchers hope that genetically improved versions of these crops are in the near future.

Taking Transgenic Plants with a Pinch of Salt
Article Abstract:
Apse et al. now report successful engineering of a salt-tolerant Arabidopsis by overexpressing a single endogenous gene. The biochemistry of genetic engineering for salt-tolerance is analyzed.
