Toting Up the Early Harvest Of Transgenic Plants
Article Abstract:
Agricultural scientists began to use molecular biology techniques to introduce desired genes into plants in the 1980s. By using these techniques the time consuming process of breeding was avoided. While there is some opposition to the consumption of genetically altered plants in Europe, though United States, Argentina, China, and Canada are more accepting of the techniques and many products contain genetically altered plant products.

Temperate Forests Gain Ground
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that many forests in temperate areas are prospering. Factors increasing forest growth include recycling, development of nonwood construction materials and reversion of farmland to forests. Improved lumber and timber technologies are also conserving forests. Applying modern agricultural methods to forestry could bring further gains.

Engineering Plants to Cope With Metals
Article Abstract:
Innovations in transgenic crops could enable some plants to do well in soils with high heavy metal content, while other plants would actually clean up the metal. However, researchers say that extensive field trials are necessary before such crops can be planted on contaminated soil.
