The river and time: Pigeon's toxic past
Article Abstract:
Champion's Fibre Mill, set up in 1908, began polluting the river Pigeon, NC, with a colored, foamy and smelly effluent. Cocke countians named the Pigeon the Black River due to its extremely polluted condition. Moreover, the stench was unbearable during the summer months. At times, the foam was also two to three feet thick. Lack of funds prevented law suits being framed against Champion. However, the company maintained throughout that the pollution was nontoxic and harmless, and that it was doing everything possible to cut down on the pollution level.
