Risk guidelines for reproductive, neurotoxic effects near completion at EPA
Article Abstract:
The EPA is developing new guidelines for conducting risk assessments of noncarcinogenic toxic agents. The guidelines require assessors to consider the body of available information before choosing an approach to assessing noncancer risk. Some experts, however, criticize the guidelines' lack of provisions concerning the prediction of specific health effects of noncancer agents. They suggest the development of statistical and analytical methods that would allow assessors to assess as well as to predict risks.

Birth defects, other disorders linked to Superfund site exposure, ATSDR says
Article Abstract:
Health studies reviewed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) since 1983 are linking exposure to Superfund sites with birth defects, increased abnormal cell counts, lung problems, and speech and hearing impairments. In its report, the ATSDR concluded that living near hazardous waste sites have adverse effects to human health. However, it failed to indicate the implications of the nature and extent of exposure to Superfund sites to the susceptibility of exposed populations.
