U.S. base closures bring post-Cold War jitters
Article Abstract:
The closure of hundreds of US military bases is causing concern to the workers being displaced. It not only reduces the number of military personnel in the armed forces but also results in a loss of employment in general. Statistics show that the military has reduced its personnel by 1.5 million, and it will be further weakened by the loss of 500 bases, which are proposed to be closed or converted. President Clinton's decision to consult the Congress may put a temporary halt to the closures, but are likely to continue in to the 21st century.
