Ulster progress
Article Abstract:
Northern Ireland manufacturers have been experiencing rapid growth since 1990, with manufacturing output climbing seven times faster than the UK average. In 1996 alone, the province's manufacturing output rose by 1.5%, much higher than the UK average of only 0.1%. The uptrend is predicted to continue until the early years of the 21st century. Engineering firms in Northern Ireland are successfully adapting to market forces. For instance, Maydown Precision Engineering has secured a niche as a maker of components for the aerospace and tobacco industries, while Langford Lodge Engineering is planning to diversify into other areas beyond precision machining.

Article Abstract:
UK manufacturers are adopting mass customization techniques to respond to customer demands for tailor-made goods produced within a short time. These techniques include core customization involving the use of modular designs and flexible production processes and post-product customization involving the addition of customized features to mass produced goods. However, mass customization is also hindered by factors such as inflexible factories, expensive products and inadequate information systems.
