Within a short time of arriving in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, to challenge the landspeed record, ThrustSSC reached its target speed of 517 mph. By September 12th, 1997, the car had achieved a speed of 624 mph with a Mach number of 0.84. Despite unexpected problems, including computer failure, the ThrustSSC Team's average speed of 714.144 mph smashed the previous world land speed record on September 25th, 1997.
