Use of audio signals for chatter detection and control
Article Abstract:
The audio signals emitted by various sensors were evaluated for their ability to control and detect chatter. Comparisons between force dynamometers, accelerometers and microphones show that the microphone provides the best signal for chatter detection and control. The microphone identifies chatter from tool, workpiece and machine flexibilities including low-immersion cuts. Directionalization techniques to isolate cutting process sound from other noises are presented. Testing results for chatter detection and control using a microphone are also described.

Sensor synthesis for control of manufacturing processes
Article Abstract:
Two methods for the synthesis of multiple sensor information are evaluated. The first method is based on statistical information on the relationship between the state variables and process model estimates. The second method involves sythesis utilizing a training phase. Results show that the method requiring a training phase is more accurate than the statistical method for predicting tool wear. The synthesis of multiple sensor information also provides better tool wear predictions than single sensor information.

A model of the sequential bending process for manufacturing simulation
Article Abstract:
A model for the sequential bending process is developed. The model allows the simulation of manufacturing processes for improved parameter sensitivity and process control. The model was used in a measurement and control simulation that allowed both operator-controlled algorithms and automatic control. Experiments on steel, aluminum and brass plates were also performed to verify the model. Although results showed good agreement, the values of certain material parameters had to be adjusted.
