Water pollution point sources still significant in urban areas
Article Abstract:
Studies conducted by US Geological Survey scientists revealed that point sources continue to be a major factor in nitrogen and phosphorous pollution in some streams and rivers. The study, which involved some 600,000 miles of streams and rivers and 850 major water reservoirs, showed that point sources provided more than half the nitrate and phosphorous found in the water. The findings indicate that the Clean Water Act is not as effective as previously thought and that better water quality management strategies are needed.

EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) Robert Huggett has aggressively pushed for the restructuring of his department into a more research-oriented focus. In particular, Huggett has called for the reorganization of ORD laboratories into 'mega-labs' based on a risk assessment-risk management paradigm. He has also initiated long-term research programs and promoted the establishment of better ties to the academe.

Heading for zero: alternatives to CFC's and halons
Article Abstract:
The proceedings of the annual International CFC and Halon Alternatives Conference are presented. In this meeting sponsored by the Alliance of Responsible CFC Policy, the timetable and costs of CFCs and halons phase-out were the main concern of the audience. The refrigeration industry was particularly involved in this discussion. Hydrofluorocarbons are now being utilized as refrigerants replacing CFCs and halons.
