Woodrow Wilson Bridge design chosen

Article Abstract:

The aging Woodrow Wilson Bridge crossing the Potomac River near Washington, DC, will be replaced by a new 12-lane, 70-ft high twin-span bridge. Once completed, the new bridge would be one of the widest bascule bridges in the world. It will be 257 ft wide and would include pedestrian and bike lanes. The design calls for the installation of 18 piers to be placed 300 ft apart and each pier will rest on 42-in diameter steel piles driven to a depth of about 150 ft beneath the Potomac River. Its arches would be made to look like those from other bridges within the DC metropolitan area. The design came from engineering firm DeLeuw-Steinman of Baltimore, MD.

Space Web bridge breaks 2 mile barrier

Article Abstract:

A UK engineer has developed a design that will potentially allow the cost-effective construction of suspension bridges spanning over two miles. Rose Assocs engineer Gordon Rose's horizontal suspension bridge or 'space web' may be able to span nearly 2.5 miles without relying on high towers or a heavy deck to counter wind and seismic forces. The space web features horizontal cables running the length of the bridge to resist wind and seismic loads and secondary cables attached to the horizontal ones to form a web that supports the deck.
