Association between medication supplies and healthcare costs in older adults from an urban healthcare system
Article Abstract:
The relationship of medication supplies to healthcare costs in older adults in an urban healthcare system have been studied in a cross-sectional study with 3-year data with the finding that more than 50% of the older adults in the study have under- or over-supplies of medications for treatment of their chronic diseases. Inappropriate supplies are associated with healthcare utilization and costs.

Outcomes of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy among older adults in a community setting
Article Abstract:
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and its outcomes have been studied in older adults using a prospective cohort study in a community in which 150 patients over age 59 received PEG. It was found that PEG tube feeding in severely/chronically ill older adults can be safely carried out but that important patient burdens are associated. Limited evidence that the procedure improves functional/nutritional/subjective health status in the cohort of older adults exists. A randomized trial of PEG tube feeding vs other care methods for older adults with difficulty eating is needed.

Cost of health care for a community of older adults in an urban academic healthcare system
Article Abstract:
The major expenditiure in healthcare for the elderly occures in conjunction with hospital stays, but this constitutes a minority of elderly adults. Older adults are admitted to hospitals approximately one or fewer times during a four-year period. The highest cost arise when patients die, except when the death occures in the hospital.
