Total body mass, fat mass, far-free mass, and skeletal muscle in older people: cross-sectional differences in 60-year-old persons
Article Abstract:
Significant age-related differences have been found in body composition of men and women aged 60-95 years through use of a cross-sectional, nonrandomized study in an outpatient clinic involving 91 healthy men and 100 healthy women. It is concluded that further refinement in the definition of a sarcopenia index is necessary, based on lack of agreement between two independent sarcopenia indexes. All lean body mass parameters were significantly lower in subjects age 80 and older than in those age 70-79, except appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) in women

Patterns of use of common major procedures in medical care of older adults
Article Abstract:
The most common medical procedures are used rarely in the very old and those near death. Frequent hospitalizations according to Medicare data include bowel surgery, cardiovascular procedures, as well as hip and femur surgery. Chemotherapy and aggressive cardiac care declines among the 85-year-olds, while 70% of the common procedures in this group involve repair to the hip and femur.
