Escaping lock-in: the case of the electric vehicle
Article Abstract:
The chances of overcoming technological lock-in is illustrated in electric vehicles. The historical rivalry between gasoline cars and electric vehicles is reviewed across five periods from the beginnings of the automobile industry in 1885-1905. In conclusion, the transition from gasoline to electric transportation is not possible in the present conditions. Moreover, six factors determine freedom from technological stability: problems with the present technology, legislation, technological innovations, consumer behavior, potential market and scientific information.
