Firms in new technologies: the case of superconductivity
Article Abstract:
The largest part of patenting applications for new technologies such as superconductors are owned by large multinational firms in the US, Germany and Japan. However, increasing shares of new technology patenting by small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) was evident during the 1987 technological breakthrough. Most of these SMEs, which confine their activities in national environment at present, are present in the US because of the country's favorable conditions created by public programs and the increasing domestic demand for SMEs.
