Markets, discrimination, and the economic contribution of women in China: historical evidence
Article Abstract:
Chinese society considers men as superior to women. This traditional belief remains existent today, bolstered by research articles discussing the limited contribution of women to China's economy. However, there never has been any empirical evidence that supports this hypothesis. To remedy this problem, the economic role of women in Chinese society is determined using a 1936 household survey in northeast China. Evidence indicates that the economic role of Chinese women may have been underestimated by previous researchers.
