Article Abstract:
US patent data is used to study how the innovative capabilities of Taiwan, South Korea, Hong-Kong and Singapore that expanded in relation to emerging economies in Asia and Latin America. The relative importance of foreign multinationals, business groups, individuals, domestic firms and research institutes in innovations is also studied.

Convergence and polarization in global income levels: a review of recent results on the role of international technology diffusion
Article Abstract:
The literature on technological change and diffusion to shed new light on the evolution of the world's cross-country income distribution is reviewed. The evidence on whether international trade, foreign direct investment, and other cross-border activities are important for technology diffusion is presented.
