Article Abstract:
Social Security provides the financial means to live independently and Medicare helps to ensure those financial means by substantially reducing the financial consequences of instances in which healthcare is required. A discussion on whether Social Security and Medicare matter to individuals, families and society is presented while considering the policy challenges of alternatives for their future.

How Supplemental Security Income works

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that was selected to promote the image of supplemental income as insurance rather than 'welfare' and is funded by general federal tax revenues. To qualify for SSI benefits an applicant's income must be below $564 for an individual and $846 for a couple.

How Medicare works

An insight into the features of Medicare that was enacted in the year 1965 under Title 18 of the Social Security Act to help older people obtain and pay for medical care is presented. Worker and the worker's spouse would be eligible for Medicare at age 65 after working at least 40 quarters in Medicare-covered employment.
