University - industry collaborations in Japan: the role of new technology - based firms in transforming the national innovation systems
Article Abstract:
A study examining the effect of new technology-based firms on universities/industry collaborative (UIC) activities in Japan is presented. It is observed that such collaborations increase the productivity of small firms whereas large firms barely feel the impact because of in-house research and development. Increase in UIC activities is likely to reduce the dependence of large corporations on in-house R&D activities for innovations.
